330kv Benin-Onitsha transmission line energized

The second 330kv transmission line connecting Benin in Edo State, to Onitsha, Anambra State has been commissioned and energized by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The line was energized weekend with an initial load of 131 megawatts, a statement issued by the TCN spokesman, Dave Ifabiyi said.

By this commissioning, Benin and Onitsha transmission substations are now linked with a double circuit transmission line for the first time.

The statement quoted the company’s chief executive, Engineer Olusola Akinniranye, as saying that the meeting of the International N minus 1 (N-1) criteria means that apart from the ability to wheel more power, the grid system will remain stable in the event of the loss of one of the lines.This will further enhance the nation’s grid stability and wheeling capacity.

Engineer Akinniranye also said upon completion of the on-going Alaoji -Owerri - Onitsha; Alaoji – Ikot Ekpene– Ugwaji – New Haven and Ugwaji – Aliade – Makurdi – Jos as well as Osogbo - Benin 330kV transmission lines projects, the nation’s transmission grid will be more robust and stable.

Also, one of the 2 x 150 MVA, 330/132KV Transformers at Calabar was energized on Sunday, 17th February 2013 by turning in and turning out of the Itu – Calabar 132kV transmission line into Calabar 330/132kV transmission substation to energize the 132kV busbars.
