Impeachment: House passes confidence vote in Tambuwal

Members of the House Representatives yesterday unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, following reports of plans to oust him over alleged impropriety in the award of a N2.5 billion contract for the purchase of 360 Camry cars for committee activities.

Resuming plenary proceedings after the Christmas and New Year break yesterday, the House unanimously adopted a motion sponsored by Rep. Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi (PDP, Enugu) who came under matters of privilege.

Ozomgbachi, who chairs the House Committee on Works, drew attention of his colleagues to the matter and argued that that it was a clear design to create disharmony since the decision to install anybody as Speaker of the House lied with the 360 members.

Consequently, Rep Bello Osagie (ACN, Edo), moved a motion to pass a vote of confidence on Tambuwal and the entire leadership. His motion was seconded by Chairman of the Committee on Aviation, Rep. Nkriruka Onyejeocha.

However, before putting the question on the motion for a voice vote, said he “felt terribly bad” when he read the publications.

Tambuwal also re-iterated the resolve of the green chamber to conclude the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution in order to make it a document “more attuned to the needs and yearnings of our people.”
