Maku laments poor environmental sanitation in Bayelsa

Information Minister Labaran Maku has expressed displeasure over what he described as the unhealthy environmental situation in Bayelsa State.

He spoke yesterday when the National Good Governance Tour team inspected the Biogbolo community primary school.

Maku, who expressed disgust at the sight of refuse dumps at the entrance of the school, urged the state governor, Henry Dickson, to ensure that environmental sanitation is taken seriously in the state, particularly in Yenagoa.

The minister, who further described the school as unkempt and ill-motivating, urged the state government to consider planting trees in public institutions.

“One of the early signs of a serious administration is environmental sanitation. If you go to a place and it is clean, you know that the people there are serious,” he said.

He, however, commended the state for setting aside N135 million to construct 200 primary schools across the state.

Earlier, the state commissioner for works, Erijakpo Lawrence, said the new schools under construction will give priority to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a deliberate strategy to inculcate basic computer appreciation in pupils.
