Kwara moves to sanitize college

The Kwara State government on Tuesday said the College of Education, Ilorin, which is enmeshed in crisis leading to the suspension of its acting provost, would soon be sanitized and repositioned to deliver on its mandate.

Beside the suspension of the acting provost, Dr. Abdulrahman Ibrahim, the government at the weekend sacked the college council to pave way for the smooth implementation of a white paper report on the college.

The state’s Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Alhaji Aliyu Lade, in an interview with Daily Trust said the crisis rocking the college bothered on “administrative incompetence”.

It would be recalled that some students who ran degree programmes in the college in affiliation with Ekiti State University (EKSU) protested last week because, according to them, the school failed to remit some amount of money to the university which prevented them from being mobilised for the national youth service corps.

Daily Trust, however, gathered that the government had directed the college to pay the money totalling N80million being owed the university to clear the coast for the students to go for service.

The commissioner disclosed that part of the steps to resolve the “mess” in the college was the appointment of a substantive provost in the next two or three weeks.
