LG workers protest non-payment of salaries

Members of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State yesterday protested over non-payment of six months salaries.

Chairman of the union, Hassan Jatau said, “for six months now, we’ve not been paid salaries. The council has purchased more tractors when a lot of tractors are lying down at the secretariat without repairs.”

NULGE urged the council to seek advice of stakeholders to ascertain priority needs of the community and staff.

“Purchase of graders for repairs of feeder roads would have been better than the tractors which farmers do not need at the moment,” Jatau added.

Reacting, chairman of Jema’a Local Government Area, Daniel Amos, appealed to the union to be patient with his two months old administration.

“We inherited the problems that the staff are facing. We need understanding and cooperation for the council to source for funds for the settlement of outstanding salaries”, he said.

On the deduction of salaries for laptops loan, Amos said it was not only peculiar to Jema’a Local Government, but the entire state.

“The government is looking into the matter and will soon resolve it. We want staff of the local government to cooperate with the council to generate revenue,” he appealed.
