ECOWAS minsters to meet in Abuja on SCSA

A meeting of ministers of sports from the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) is billed to hold in Abuja next week Tuesday, February 26 to deliberate and take a common stance on issues bothering on sports administration in Africa.

One of the major issues that would top the agenda for the Abuja meeting is the hosting of CIGEPS Regional meeting for Nigeria in March, 2013; MINEP V meeting in Germany; ECOWAS position on the winding up of the Supreme Council for Sports ion Africa (SCSA); ECOWAS Games and ECOWAS countries’ performance at the Olympics.

Making this known in Abuja yesterday, Alhaji Abba Yola, Special Assistant to the Director General (DG) of the National Sports Commission (NSC), said “it has become expedient for Nigeria to host the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) as the current Chair of the African Union Council of Ministers of Sports (AU-CAMS)”.

Other issues to be discussed at the Abuja meeting, he said include the decision and resolutions taken at the AU-CAMS4 that took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in October, 2011. “Prominent among these are the resolutions that seek the dissolution or otherwise of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa”, he also said.

Eight (8) countries from SCSA Sports Development zones 2 and 3, namely The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau and Liberia as well as six (6) Sports Technocrats had so far indicated interest to participate at the meeting.
