A 12 year old boy, Pam Tisken Abraham of Boys Secondary School, Gindiri, of Mangu has won the 2017 Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) Letter Writing Competition for schools in Plateau State.
Abraham, a Junior Secondary School Two (JSS2) student, emerged overall winner of the competition after his excellent writing on examination malpractice.
Kure John Aba of Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Jos North, came overall second while Nanret Moses Dakup of Salama School, Namu, Qua’an Pan was third.
The winner, Pam Tisken Abraham, while speaking with Daily Trust during the awards ceremony at Federal Secretariat in Jos, said that he was excited and happy to win the competition.
He said, “I wrote on different topics. The first one was about me and the second one we wrote to the Plateau State Commissioner for Education on examination malpractices.”
He said that in the letter, he asked government to employ more teachers and to increase their salaries so that they could teach the students better.
Speaking earlier, the District Postal Manager of Jos-District, NIPOST, Mrs. Saratu Nggada said that NIPOST collaborated with the Ministry of Secondary Education in the state and organized the competition for secondary schools students with the objective of reviving the dying culture of letter writing among students.
She said, “The number of entries received were 23, 010 from schools across the state. The letters were marked, supervised and scored by the Ministry of Education.”
She lamented that letter writing is no longer a common practice, as in recent times young and old prefer to communicate through text messages, e-mail, and Whatsapp, among others, a situation that has resulted in the steady decline in the writing and descriptive ability of students in English Language.
