Official reports say two persons were killed yesterday morning, with several injured, when a passenger train rammed into a Volkswagen commercial bus at the Pen Cinema area of Agege in Lagos State.

Some traders told Daily Trust Saturday that the death toll could be higher than the figure the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, gave.

According to some traders, the driver of the bus had left his boot open while attempting to drive across the rail tracks to beat the speeding train. Unfortunately, he had not completely made it, and as the train sped by, some passengers hanging on the train door were snagged by the boot of the bus.

The driver of the commercial bus and his conductor were said to have taken to their heels as soon as the incident occurred, while a mob torched the bus. But one account said that the driver had parked the vehicle by the rail line, ostensibly to urinate when the speeding train ran into the open boot.

Tiamiyu, who confirmed the incident, said, “One adult sustained  injuries and was transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, two other adult males died.
