The Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, yesterday donated a speed boat to Mawogi, a riverine community in the area.
Ajiya, while commissioning the boat at the Gurara River bank, said the gesture was a measure to reduce the challenges of people of the community whenever they are transporting their crops to the market.
He said the council was already making effort to liaise with the FCT Administration to ensure that the construction of a bridge across River Gurara was captured in the 2018 budget.
According to him, his administration was aware of some challenges facing residents of the community, stating the council would ensure that social amenities were provided before the end of his tenure.
“I am among those that are happy today because the presentation of the speed boat was part of my promise during my campaign which is fulfilled. And I want to inform the people of Mawogi that we are making effort so that the construction of a bridge across the river commences early next year,” he said.
The chairman therefore called on people of the community to make good use of the speed boat donated to them.
Also speaking, the village head of Mawogi, Alhaji Muhammad Hassan, said the donation of the speed boat has brought relief to people of his community.
He assured the chairman of the community’s support to his administration and promised to handle the speed boat with care.
“I want to let the chairman know that my subjects and I are quite elated by this gesture, because before now, our pregnant women take risk to board canoes and cross the river before they get to Abaji town to access hospital service,” he said.
The traditional ruler, appealed to the council chairman to intensify effort in ensuring that a clinic built by Senator Philip Aduda at the village, which he said has been completed since July, is commissioned.
