With just weeks left in its well-deserved break, the prestigious Nigerian polo national tour can’t wait to hit the road for its second phase, with Abraka, Minna  and Abuja lining up three box office events to gallop off the stage.

The first phase of the tour that took off on a blistering pace last August in the ancient kingdom of Katsina, was rounded off with fanfare earlier last month during the Lagos International Polo fiesta that saw Fifth Chukkers Access Bank team outpacing their opponents to win the biggest crown.

The month long break that traditionally allows the battle weary players and the ponies’ time to rest is usually a shopping period for the patrons who rejuvenate their various stables and double their horse powers ahead of the next leg of the tour.

If the standing at the end of the first leg of the tour is anything to go by, then the list of teams to watch out for as the April resumption date beckons, has Abuja, Katsina, Lagos, Kano, Yola, Bauchi and Port Harcourt based teams leading the pack.

Others are Almat Group team who are still the team to beat in the medium-goal polo, and Senator Hadi Sirika’s Rubicon who ended the first phase on high after successfully defending the General Hassan Cup in Port Harcourt last January.

One team that has demonstrated enough ambition of breaking into the big league is Honourable Aliyu Wadada and his Keffi Ponys. They may fly in this concluding phase of the season if they prime their horsepower and keep their concentration.

The biggest polo prizes that would be at stake during this second phase include; the Patrons Cup from Abraka, UNICEF Access bank Charity Shield, IBB Cup, Democracy Cup, and Emir of Kano Cup.

There is the Nigerian Cup from Katsina and two Governors Cups in Bauchi and Yola respectively.

Babangida’s EL-Amin are the proud custodian of the biggest titles; the Georgian and the IBB crowns.

Intrestingly, some of the big patrons and their players are equally embarking on foreign tours to garner more exposures ahead of the next month’s take off.

Straight from their various stables, the players and the ponies would hit the road to the Niger delta, with the exclusive Abraka Turf Club in mind.

Abraka holds sway as one of the nation’s biggest holiday resort during the Easter Holidays, and Chief Host, Prince Albert Esiri said everything is on ground to make the 2018 Easter tournament the biggest and the most memorable in years.

From Abraka, the road tour will head to “Power State” for annual Minna polo festival, before hitting the nation’s capital city for the Democracy Polo Tournament at the Guards Polo Club at Asokoro.

Already, Bauchi Polo Club has sent out notification for annual polo extravaganza that rubs shoulders with Yola festival as the biggest polo event in North Eastern part of the country.

Polo Royals can authoritatively disclose that the 2018 Bauchi Polo Tournament is scheduled to come up from Saturday 30th June to Saturday 7th July 2018. The Cups to be competed for are the Governor’s Cup which remains the event’s biggest prize.

Others are the Emir of Bauchi Cup, Emir of Katagum Cup and the low-goal Sarkin Fulani Cup that traditionally attract the highest number of teams from across the country.
