The subject of the almajiri will be the focus of a new anthology of poems being put together by Dr. Saka Aliyu of Bayero University, Kano.

In a call for entry, Dr. Aliyu said the anthology is aimed at questioning, criticizing or empathizing with the almajirci practice.

“Many people are out there passionate or concerned about the plight of these young children who are learning the hard way, yet their voices are lone voices in the wilderness of disinterest. This anthology is advocatory in nature and seeks to gather all such voices into a single note, raising its decibel, that it may tap on eardrums and elicit a reappraisal and a rethinking,” he said.

The anthology is seeking up to three poems of no more than forty lines from each contributing poet along with a 40 word biography, which should be sent to the email address: [email protected].

Submissions can be made from December 15 through to February 28, 2018 while successful poets will be notified by June, 2018.
