Elections in Nigeria come and go by every four years; that of 2015 received and enjoyed wide range of commendations for its near perfect conduct by well-meaning citizens and partners in progress from within and outside the country. It was said to have been the most credible and fairest election the country has had since inception of democracy.

The attested nature of the credibility of the election at every stage of its conduct was what informed the much acclaimed decision taken by the then president Jonathan, to concede defeat when it was obvious that his party, the PDP, was fast losing grounds in the contest even before finally declaring the outcome. This noble decision, as many had observed saved a great deal of trouble and possible anarchy that would have consumed the entire country and plunge it into utter despair and forlornness.

Interestingly, the outcome of 2015 election was embraced by all and sundry, and better still well welcomed with high hopes and expectations that quick answers to the inflicted and yet fast-emerging problems bedeviling the country are found. And, that the right sets of people are now onboard to steer the affairs of the country and meander it through the rough and dusty roads to the Promised Land.

To many, who see the big picture and navigate through the historical narratives of developmental trajectories of developed nations the world over, leading to the much anticipated quick answers welcomed the need for high hopes and expectations on government’s shoulders but with one eye closed; not certain of quick realizations.

2019 is still relatively not too close, and has not ultimately come around for politics to set the tone and dominate the scenes all over again. Politicians from all indications are increasingly focusing their energies and regrettably channelling huge resources at their disposals otherwise meant to champion and advance the course of collective societal progress in a bid to actualize 2019 even when it is still far.

To this point, it is sad enough that the sought-after answers have not been forthcoming or yet to come to fruition, and this has compelled quite many to have a rethink about being extra careful when next is election time. This ought to have been disturbing the politicians and should become the focal point of focusing and channelling their energies, plans and strategies with a view to attacking the aforementioned societal problems head on, if 2019 is to be in their favour. 2019 would be a miscalculation for those who heed not this plea if the plight of the common man is not properly looked into and adequately catered for.

Today it is evidently clear that a sheer number of them are keen and completely mad about what and how 2019 is going to be like. For or against them!

In the end, it would however not be out of place to call on the politicians; those entrusted with people’s mandate to in their interest look inward and wake up to their responsibilities. It is my opinion that this noble act alone is enough to act as a soothing-balm to their stressed minds, sleepless nights and possibly see them through the nightmares with 2019. Now is the time when it is most urgent, at least for 2019 if not for the sake of the common man.
