Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the former governor of old Kaduna State, Lawal Kaita, who died at the age of 86, was a fearless democrat.

He said Kaita’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle would not be forgotten in a hurry, adding that he was a man of remarkable virtues who inspired whoever interacted with him.

The ex-VP in a statement, explained that the late Kaita was never afraid to speak his mind in pursuit of his principles, including his insistence that political parties must respect internal democracy in order to be credible.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has joined the individuals and organisations mourning the death of Kaita.

The APC, in a statement signed voiced condolences to his family, government, Katsina Emirate and people of his home State of Katsina and Kaduna State where he governed on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

The party recalled what it called his “outstanding tenure and service” as member of the 1994–1995 Constitutional Conference; leader of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) which largely metamorphosed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when the fourth republic was birthed and one of the founding members of the defunct Action Congress (AC) in 2006.
