It’s just politics. He wants to strengthen his political base by rewarding some warriors that can work for him come 2019 general elections.

Mohammed Mamman, 62, Media Consultant, Hayin Banki, Kaduna

If the expansion will greatly assist Mr. President in discharging his mandate, well and good. It will be for the betterment of the country.

Misbahu Raji, 45, Public Servant, Ungwar Sarki, Kaduna

Cabinet expansion at this time is a good step. Hence, good governance in a democracy is that which keys into the yearnings of the people.

The plan of the President to expand his cabinet at this material point in time is not unexpected as election year is just a stone throw away. Remember the present government is one of the most conservative in terms of political appointments. A lot of political loyalists have not been settled and there is also allegation of lop-sidedness in the appointments. So the plan is an attempt to consolidate and expand political loyalties. This is a typical antic of Nigerian politicians. In the build up to 2015 elections, GEJ expanded his cabinet and brought in Shekarau and co in 2014. It is a moment of political reckoning. I expect most of the appointees to come from the Southeast, the region with least support from the President and more so because PDP zoned its Vice President to the region.

It is long overdue. Our expectation is to see action within a week after he expands the cabinet. It is high time Nigerians see the real change they voted for, especially now that the government has claimed we are out of the recession period. We hope he will reshuffle and expand the cabinet with people that will add value to the nation rather than being a liability to the government and the masses that voted for change to happen.

Faruk Shuaib, 23, Student, Tudun Nupawa, Kaduna

The cabinet expansion is uncalled for. It will only result to more draining of our already exhausted revenue, and you know Nigerians with pomposity. Each minister will have his or her own aides, which will result to a lot of spending by the federal government. The moneys we have borrowed is enough to sell the country. We should be looking at ways to refund the ones we borrowed and not put more pressure on the economy. We should make funds available to ordinary Nigerians to ensure better living. Investment on a better Nigeria should be the priority of the government. Thus, I believe the ones we have are capable, but if the reverse is the case they, should be changed.
