The Nigerian Academy of Sciences (NAS) has joined science leaders from around the world to call on the Commonwealth Heads of Government to use the best available science to guide action on climate change.
According to a statement signed by its President, Professor Mosto Onuoha, NAS said the call was part of a consensus statement on climate change launched recently by eight national academies and societies of science from around the Commonwealth states ahead of next month’s Commonwealth summit in the United Kingdom.
Prof. Onuoha said the consensus statement, which represents the consensus views of tens of thousands of scientists, marked the first time Commonwealth nations had come together to urge their governments to take further action to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions during the second half of the 21st Century.
He said the greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitment agreed to by 160 parties in the 2015 Paris Agreement was the first step in a long journey.
“The Nigerian Academy of Science stands ready to assist the Nigerian Government, and indeed broader Commonwealth effort, by providing sound scientific advice on issues relating to climate change,” he said.
