The Daily Trust Foundation yesterday commenced a three-day training workshop on Advanced Data Journalism for 20 journalists from the Northeast sub-region.

Daily Trust Foundation, is the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the Media Trust Group (MTG), publishers of Daily Trust Newspapers, Aminiya, Trust TV, Trust Radio and Digital Trust.

The workshop, taking place in Maiduguri, Borno State, has 20 journalists from print, broadcast and online platforms drawn from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.

Our correspondent reports that the workshop organised in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation, aimed at equipping the journalists with the skills and tools needed to excel in data-driven reporting.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the chairman of the foundation, Malam Bilya Bala, emphasised the importance of capacity building in journalism.

He noted that the training builds upon previous activities the Foundation has conducted since 2017, particularly in the area of investigative reporting.

According to him, the foundation in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation has been instrumental in providing journalists with the necessary support and resources to produce credible and relevant journalism in the face of the growing fake news and misinformation.

“For every successful investigation, journalists need evidence, not just in the forms of documents and interviews, but also in publicly available data which can show patterns or trends that alert those in power to things that may have gone wrong,” he said.

Borno State Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Atar, commended Daily Trust Foundation for organising the training and urged the participating journalists to judiciously apply the knowledge they will acquire during the training.
