The mace, the symbol of authority was taken away by five persons while the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu was presiding over the Senate today.
The day’s session started around 11.am and 15 minutes after five unknown persons sneaked into the chamber, ran towards where the mace was and went away with it.
At the commencement of the sitting, Ekweremadu had assured his colleagues of their safety.
" Just to assure you that the chamber is safe. You don’t need to be scared because of the odour your are perceiving "he said.
The unknown persons went away in a waiting black jeep, leaving security personnel including policemen and sergeant -at -arms agape.
Confusion has since enveloped the chamber and the lawmakers are also left agape. They are on executive session now.
The Senate president, Bukola Saraki had on Monday night left for Washington, United States, to attend this year’s Spring Meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
