The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recently inaugurated the anti-corruption and transparency unit (ACTU) chapter of the Kwara State Polytechnic.
The commission also inducted members of the unit who would work for three years after which they may be reappointed if they are found worthy in character.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Ag. Chairman of ICPC, Hon. Abdullahi Bako, who was represented by the head, anti-corruption unit of the ICPC, Mr Justin Kuatsea, said the commission recognised the crucial role played by the educational sector in entrenching good ethical values in the younger generation.
“This occasion has no doubt presented a perfect opportunity for partnership and cooperation between the ICPC and institutions such as the polytechnic and other higher institutions across the country.
“We have been in partnership with the National Universities Commission and Federal Ministry of Education which has yielded positive results leading to shutting down of illegally run tertiary institutions among others.
“It is in continuation of these sanitising efforts that we believe in the existence and effective operation of the ACTU in public institutions which is directed towards combating corrupt practices and entrenching transparency in public service,” he stated.
The chairman therefore charged the management of Kwara polytechnic to provide the unite with adequate fund for its sustenance, provision of suitable office accommodation and conducive environment for it to function effectively.
While congratulating the inducted members of the unit for being found worthy to serve, he implored them not to use their position to witch-hunt or victimise anybody but work closely with the management and staff of the institution to entrench culture of discipline and accountability which will contribute in great measure to making the institution and Nigeria a better place for everyone and future generations.
In his acceptance speech, chairman of the ACTU, Barr. Fabiyi Felix Bisi, promised that they will work vigorously to tame corrupt acts and practices within the polytechnic community, adding that it is a great task but achievable.
“We are determined to set in motion a lasting mechanism and network that will minimise corruption.
“We also require total support and assistance in dissemination of relevant information to the unit,” he said.
