The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi ll, has canvassed for a law that will compel emirs, governors and other public office holders to go for drug test.

Sanusi, who made the appeal at the opening of a 2-day Senate Roundtable on Drug Abuse Epidemic in Nigeria, said he would be happy to subject himself to drug test.

"When we begin to set this example, the younger ones will understand that if they engage in drug abuse, they will certainly limit their opportunities of becoming leaders.

"The police, army and other paramilitary officers and men should not be drug addicts.

The emir lamented that the country is facing a greater danger, noting that the prevalence of drug abuse was a sign of failure on the part of our governors.

He suggested that fight against drug abuse should be on the forefront of government agenda.

He said, "Our major problem is that we are not implementing the laws we have for regulating drugs. We have guidelines on who is allowed to sell the drugs and who is to sell the drugs to, but we are not following these guidelines.”
