Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria have decried the porous nature of Nigerian borders, saying it is aiding the influx of substandard equipment and regents into the country.

This was disclosed at opening of the annual scientific conference and workshop of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) held in Kaduna.

The President of the association, Alhaji Toyosi Raheem expressed worry over substandard equipment and reagents in the country; calling on the Federal Government to support the In Vitro diagnostic laboratory established under the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria to check the quality of laboratory diagnoses that are coming into the country.

He lamented the inter-professional rivalry between the pathologists and medical lab scientists.

He further urged the Minister of Health to use his goodwill in office to resolve the matter.

“If this matter cannot be resolved in our own generation, then the future is bleak. The place of professionalism should not be underestimated, especially in the health sector. We should know our job schedules and enabling act among others. We as laboratory scientists are not going beyond our schedules, so others should not too,” he said.

Commenting on the activities of quacks in the profession, he warned the people against the danger of allowing quacks and substandard practice in the society.

He noted that the association is partnering with the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria which is the statutory body charged with the responsibility of registration, accreditation and monitoring of medical laboratories in the country.

“They have started with flag off of inspection in Sokoto state and we shall continue to work with the council to achieve the elimination of quacks and professional malpractice in the country,” he stressed.

He stated that the medical laboratory scientists at the end of the conference are expected to be more dedicated to quality laboratory services in the country.

Adding that it also expected to achieve intra and inter-professional relationship among various bodies and associations within the health sector.

The theme of the conference ‘Strengthening of medical laboratory services – A panacea for national health agenda’ according to Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state is apt while he assured of the commitment of his administration towards bettering the health sector in the state.
