Weekend Magazine: How did you find yourself in music?

Faze: It was a thing of chance. It wasn’t really something I wanted to put my mind to, but in the end it’s what came to be. I studied Accounting in University, so I probably would have been an accountant if it wasn’t for music.

WM: You have been a part of the music industry for quite a while. How would you describe your professional climb to stardom?

Faze: I’d say it was by God’s grace first of all, and it was a struggle. But in the end it was all worth it since I was able to achieve a successful career. It makes you forget what you went through before getting here.

WM: You were in the music group Plantashun Boiz with Blackface and 2Face. What was it like when you went solo and what was your reason behind it?

Faze: I think it was for a good reason. We all decided to go solo and it actually portrayed everyone’s abilities individually so I think it was a good thing. I had no reason not to pursue a solo career. The group broke up and it was the smart choice to make since I still loved making music.

WM: What’s the story behind your name Faze?

Faze: Plantashun Boiz was initially a duo of two people – Blackface and 2Face and at the time I was bearing the name Lyrical Orge. My name couldn’t blend in with Blackface and 2Face. It sounded better as a trio of Blackface, 2Face and Faze. So that’s where the name came from.

WM: Apart from music, you’ve also gone into acting. Why the switch?

Faze: Well, I wouldn’t call it a switch. I was told to do it and it’s always good to prove yourself and your skills in many other aspects besides music. So I tried it and from people’s reactions it was good. I would love to continue acting in the right movies.

WM: You’ve been a music hiatus for quite some time. You haven’t released anything new in a while. Do you plan on returning to the music scene?

Faze: I actually released a new single ‘Perfect Woman’ recently and my new album is also on the way. I’ve done a lot of collaborations and I’ve been working really hard on it. It should be coming out this month, November and it’s going to be crazy.

WM: How close are you to your former group members?

Faze: We’re all good. We’re friends and we still get along well.

WM: What inspired you to focus on RnB?

Faze: Music is all about being flexible. I’m known for RnB and Reggae. But this time what I’m doing is more on both sides of RnB, Reggae and the tempo side too. In my new album, I’m leaving my comfort zone and this is to show you that Faze has phased to a different dimension. I’m still being myself but I’m also trying out something new.

WM: What do you do in your free time?

Faze: I don’t really hang out. I’m at home most of the time unless it’s work. I love watching international comedy movies and Nollywood movies too.

WM: Who are your music inspirations?

Faze: Fela. I don’t play with Fela because he speaks the truth and he’s one of the best.

WM: Which of your songs was your favourite to work on?

Faze: ‘Faze Alone,’ because I wanted to portray what Faze could do alone and that was the one I really put my mind into, to prove myself.
