Governors of Tahoua region of Niger Republic and Sokoto state have met towards enhancing security and other ties between them.
Governor Abdulrahman Musa of Tahoua region  who led the   delegation from Niger Republic, stressed the need to boost security in the areas.
“The Boko Haram menace and other security challenges may be a bit far from us, but we must be proactive to prevent its spilling to this side of our countries,” he pointed out.
Musa noted relative security in the areas bothering Sokoto and Tahoua, but observed precarious situation in Nigeria’s North East and Diffa region of Niger Republic.
He described the cultural and historical ties that binds their people as strong and urged closer collaboration in education.,
In his remarks, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said the meeting sought to enhance cooperation between the people and government of Sokoto and Tahoua.
He noted the meeting’s areas of focus to include security, trade, agriculture, forestry development, cultural integration, animal breeding, education and movement of persons in furtherance of the charter of ECOWAS and the African Union (AU).
Tambuwal added that effective use of water from various rivers connecting neighbouring communities in the two countries was also slated for discussion.
“Of particular interest to us is the dam recently constructed in a community in Tahoua which has dried up water in Kalmalo dam of Illela LGA of Sokoto state,” he disclosed.
