The Senate yesterday passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Army in Kwara South senatorial district to address recurring armed robbery cases in the area.

The resolution followed a motion by Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (APC, Kwara) and seconded by Senator Shaaba Lafiagi (APC, Kwara).

Ibrahim told the Senate that armed robbers numbering about 30 killed 18 persons and raided 6 banks.

“Worried that if such attacks are allowed to continue, it may lead to the closure of financial institutions in the town and this may cripple commercial activities in the town and its environs,” he said.

The Senate directed the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to reinforce security measures to secure lives and properties in the area.

It also urged the banks to consider immediate re-opening of their branches for normal businesses as soon as the security atmosphere improves.

The Senate mandated its Committees on Police Affairs and National Security and Intelligence to investigate the matter and report back to within two (2) weeks.
