The Kano state wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has shelved its political rally scheduled to hold today in Gaya local government area of the state.


Daily Trust reports that the PDP is to hold a political rally today in Gaya town to receive a former gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), Engineer Bashir Ishaq Bashir into the PDP.

However, police authorities in the state had on Thursday, urged the party to shelve the rally as it coincided with a joint security agencies operation to be carried out around Gaya axis.

Addreasing a press conference today, the state Chairman of the party, Senator Mas’ud El-Jibril Doguwa, said the postponement of the rally followed series of appeals by some personalities from across Nigeria.

Doguwa said "PDP decided to shelve the rally until further notice based on the appeals of party chieftains and other stakeholders. PDP is a law abiding party and it always respect constituted authorities.

"I am calling on our members to remain calm and law abiding citizens. We will give police authority benefit of doubt and we will fix another day for the rally to see what action the police will take."

On his part, the celebrant, Engineer Bashir Ishaq Bashir, said 10 police patrol vehicles with armed policeman, stormed the venue of the rally in Gaya town today and removed all the facilities erected for rally.

Engineer Bashir, who accused the Ganduje-led government of sabotaging PDP progress, said "We never expect this kind of insensitive and autocratic behaviours from the people we elected.

"This is a clear indication that the days of APC in Kano state are numbered and they have signed their termination date."
