The police in Akwa Ibom have shot dead a wanted criminal said to be terrorising Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo local government areas of the state.

The deceased, Isaac, whose surname is yet to be ascertained by the security agency, also known as Stainless or Baggy Short, allegedly continued to unleash terror on indigenes of the two council areas after his predecessor, Akaninyene Jumbo (Iso Kpafid), was killed on January 15 by a joint task force of security agencies.

Speaking yesterday in Uyo, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, said Stainless led other hoodlums on a revenge mission on the communities, killing, raping, kidnapping, issuing threat letters and indiscriminately burning of houses.

Ogunjemilusi said the continued activities of the hoodlums led the security agencies in the state to re-strategise and mount a massive operation against the criminal gang.

He added that the effort led to the arrest of many of the hoodlums who, in spite of numerous appeals, refused to surrender their weapons and embrace peace.

“Our efforts received a boost at about 10:30pm on April 18 with the death of the current and most brutal gang leader known as Stainless by his victims but whose real name is Isaac. He was known to the security community and close aides as Baggy Short. He was gunned down after serious exchange of gunfire, thus bringing to an end the reign of terror of Iso Kpafid and his lieutenants in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun.

“We have chosen to parade his corpse to demystify his invisibility and reassure the people of Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun of their safety to encourage those who have fled the areas to return home,” he added.

He said some hoodlums have moved their activities into the forest, adding that security agencies would fish them all out, adding also that arrangements have been concluded with the authorities of higher institutions and students’ unions to flush out cult members.
