The Senate yesterday deferred the passage of an anti-corruption bill, the proceeds of crimes Bill 2017 over issues relating to the Constitution of the country.

The consideration of the report of the senate committee on Judiciary on the bill has been hanging for weeks. The bill is sponsored by Senator Mohammed Hassan (PDP, Yobe).

At yesterday’s plenary, the Senate resumed the consideration of the report but during the exercise, the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu pointed out that some of the clauses in the bill are in conflict with the Constitution.

Ekweremadu, while citing order 86(2) of the Senate, suggested that the bill be recommitted to the Senate committee on Judiciary for further legislative action.

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki referred it to the Judiciary committee to ensure the bill complied with the Constitution.

“The bill is very important in the fight against corruption. The Judiciary committee and our legal unit should go through it and revert back,” he said.
