The Senate yesterday mandated its committees on Interior and Labour to investigate abuse of expatriate quota by some foreign companies operating in the country.

The probe followed a motion sponsored by Senator Andy Uba (APC, Anambra) on the abuse of the expatriate quota and seconded by Senator Bassey Akpan (PDP, Akwa Ibom).

Moving the motion, Uba noted that the Immigration Act, Cap 11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 conferred on the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Investment Promotion Council delegated powers to grant expatriate quota to companies seeking to employ expatriates in Nigeria, among other functions.

He observed that in recent times there have been avalanche of complaints of improper application of the above stipulations.

In passing resolution on the motion, the Senate asked the committees to organize a Public hearing on all the allegations and report back in one month.
