Eleven people have lost their lives in 481 fire incidents recorded in Sokoto metropolis from January till date, Director – General of the state Fire Service Alhaji Musa Mohammed has disclosed.
He added that property worth N2.6 million was lost in the infernos.
The DG said residential buildings and commercial outlets were affected, and called on the general public to be cautious in handling electrical appliances and other things that could lead to fire outbreaks.
Also commenting, Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs Alhaji Isa Achida noted with concern the rising cases of fire incidents and disclosed plans to embark on enlightenment campaign towards curbing them.
Among efforts of state government towards enhancing fire service in the state, he said, was approval for the provision of eight fire service stations with adequate manpower.
He also disclosed plans to repair the broken down fire engines in the 23 local government areas.
