Glasgow’s Muslim community in United Kingdom has reacted generously to a plea for help from the Rohingya refugees. Nearly £80,000 (N40 million) was pledged at a fundraising dinner in the city.

The principal speaker at the event, Baroness Mobarik who has just returned from a European Parliament fact-finding mission in Bangladesh, said “The conditions facing the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are very basic.

“Families, who were forced to leave most of their possessions behind, are crammed in to accommodation which is far too small for them.

“The facilities don’t allow many women to enjoy the level of privacy they need.

“The Monsoons are coming and experts predict conditions will deteriorate even further as a result.”

The event was organised by World Care Foundation, whose fund-raising efforts in Scotland are continuing this week.

A spokesman said: “Our aim is to reach £100,000 for the refugees and we are delighted that the magnificent sum of £78,000 was donated at the dinner in Glasgow.” (Glasgow Live)
