Elder-statesman, Wantaregh Paul Unongo, yesterday, stressed the need for the emergence of an Idoma governor in Benue State.

He said this would foster unity and stronger ties among the three senatorial districts in the state.

Daily Trust reports that the Idoma people, consisting of nine local government areas of Benue South Senatorial District, have never produced a governor in the almost 42-year-old state.

Unongo who spoke at a stakeholders’ emergency meeting held in Makurdi observed that the people of Benue State, irrespective of tribe, party and religion had remained united since New Year’s massacre of many people by gunmen in some parts of the state.

“I like to see Benue people continue as one united people, so I would say to Governor Samuel Ortom to consider selecting the next governor from Idoma land at the completion of his tenure: that will give credence to our unity as a state,” Unongo said.

The elder statesman, an ex-minister, noted that the Idoma people were not happy because they had been excluded from power, saying they were people who deserved to take their turn in steering the affairs of the state.
