The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is demanding a new minimum wage of N66, 500 for workers. Here are views of some Nigerians on what they think about the demand.

Daniel Agamson, 45, Engineer, Abuja

My opinion is that the demand of N66, 500 is not a bad one. Even if the government can pay N70, 000, it’s not too much because of the situation in the country. Things are very expensive.

Maji Isah, 27, self-employed, Abuja

The minimum wage should be whatever it costs for workers to support themselves in their era by working 56 hours a week and no more, plus a little extra to allow them build an emergency fund. I think the ideal minimum wage should be N55, 000 considering the economic condition of the country.

Robert Arome Eboh, 27, Civil Servant, Abuja

With the high cost of living right now, N66, 500 will be good as minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Godswill Akobueze, 33, Abuja

Receiving N18, 000 as minimum wage is poor. The suggestion of N56, 000 came up and was not honoured and now N66, 500 is being put forward. I think it is okay compared to what our senators are receiving. It will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the populace. The government can even pay N100, 000 and it won’t be too much.

Harrison Okoro, 27, Legal Practitioner, Uyo

Minimum wage is a tricky affair in Nigeria in the light of the fact that some states can’t pay the present wage of N18, 000 or rather, claim they cannot pay. Ideally though, the least anybody in Nigeria should survive on is N50, 000 a month.

Angyunwe Clement Masankari, 30,  Wukari

I think it’s a welcome idea. I agree with the increase. The cost of goods and services have increased in the country while workers salaries have remained stagnant.

Igomu Ojogbami Benedict, 29, Banker, Abuja

The minimum wage increase in my own opinion is not the problem of the Nigerian worker. As far as I am concerned, wage increase will further increase the prices of commodities. What we need to push is how to stabilize or increase the value of the naira to make it have value.
