When a ‘new’ face means a good thing

Is Nigeria blessed or cursed? With many of our leaders compromising over the years which have led to the ‘fantastically corrupt’ tag of the country, it is indeed worrisome. It took decades of the inactions of our previous leaders to get to this deplorable stage. Of course, not all are bad. There are exceptional few, still making marks.

Today, there is a new sheriff in town, in the person of Abdullahi Mukhtar. He is not the noise making type, especially noticeable due to the noise making that has characterised the commission in the past. So, beause where work is done, too much noise cannot be made. Victory abhors laxity, and the NAHCON boss knows this, and perhaps that’s why he took the bull by the horns by straddling ignominious cabals that were standing in the way of Allah’s work.

To first-time pilgrims, the seamless handling of the Hajj pilgrimage in the last 3 years where the departure, stay, and return of pilgrims happened like clockwork may seem like the norm. But to those who have ventured to travel for Hajj in the pre-Mukhtar days, their memories will be sure to paint a gory picture, compared to what is obtainable now.

“Pilgrims will return after 10 days,” Mukhtar declared during the last expedition and although many of the naysayers and their paid accomplices tried unsuccessfully to tell Nigerians otherwise, the actualisation of that declaration became a bitter pill for the charlatans to swallow. For instance,  Nigerian pilgrims are now housed in convenient hotels just around the Ka’abah and even in Madina, just as congested accommodations for pilgrims have become issues of the past.

Nigerians should begin to adopt the culture of standing up for leaders who have shown commitment and sincerity in service to the nation. We must resist the temptation, to refuse to fall into the trap of “If you cannot beat them, join them”. We must learn to think with our future pictured in a projector right in front us and avoid the ‘here and now’ syndrome that has gradually but systematically brought this nation to the dark place that she’s only now struggling to get out of.

NAHCON is unarguably one of the few institutions in this administration that is living above board and government would do better by standing by the current management of the commission.
