The Head, Communications, Sterling Bank, Oluwatomi Ajakaiye, has explained that ‘Mum in Business’ initiative aims to empower women through entrepreneurship.

Ajakaiye stated this at a briefing hosted by Sterling Bank in partnership with the Motherhood In-Style magazine in Lagos.

According to the bank Communications head, the country’s economy is growing and opportunities are being created in different sectors adding that women need to utilise their business ideas and exhibit skills that would help increase their capacities and reduce dependence on their male counterparts.

“Entrepreneurship holds the key to job creation in the country and the strength of a nation depends on the investments injected in the entrepreneurs. It is in realisation of this that Sterling Bank launched the ‘One Woman’ initiative from which ‘Mum in Business’ is springing up,” Ajakaiye said.

She said the ‘One Woman’ initiative was designed to help women actualise their dreams and be independent.

“The One Woman initiative by Sterling Bank creates unique value propositions tailored specifically for women. The value proposition comprises of an array of different value-added offerings to meet financial, business and personal needs of women in Nigeria and to foster support by providing platforms for women to support other women.

“Some of these offerings include the Sterling Maternal Medical Finance, discounts on lending rates of all existing retail loan products such as personal loan, asset acquisition loan, MSME loans, capacity building programme for young women and mentorship sessions” among others, she added.

Similarly, the convener, Mums In Business Fair and Conference, Pauline Rumm said there is need to support and empower women through entrepreneurial skills that would help build the economy.

She said for entrepreneurs to thrive in the country, they must have access to elements of success which include access to skills, access to funding and access to bankable business ideas which Sterling Bank is offering to partner with them so that their businesses can be sustained.

She also expressed optimism that the exhibition held on November 25-26, 2017 helped women to showcase their business ideas to the bank; exhibited and sold their products and also talked to pioneers of different sectors of the economy to help them confront their challenges and succeed in the business environment.
