A Benin High Court yesterday sentenced one Vera Imoh to 24 months’ imprisonment for human trafficking.

She was convicted on a two-count charge of procurement for prostitution and facilitating activity for trafficking in persons, contrary to the provisions of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.

According to the charge sheet, Imoh recruited a 16-year-old school drop out of Uwelu Secondary School, Benin, in June 2015 for her brother, Solomon, who lives in Mali.

It said the victim was promised a job in a boutique owned by Solomon, but on arrival in Mali, she was introduced into prostitution, adding that during the day she worked as a sales girl in the boutique while at night she worked as a prostitute and all her earnings were collected by Solomon.

The accused had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge upon arraignment but the judge held that the prosecution was able to prove the case beyond doubt.

Counsel to the accused, Asenoquan Oghahenhen, urged the court to tamper justice with mercy and caution the accused considering the fact that she was a young woman.

Justice Eruaga sentenced the accused to 12 months’ imprisonment on each count and to run concurrently or pay an option of N1 million fine.

He said the accused was one of those denting the image of Edo State by recruiting young girls for prostitution, adding that the accused was not unaware of the kind of “job” the victim was going to do there.
