It was all about the women with the number of them whose works were exhibited and themes majority of the thirty one works focused on Monday, April 15, in commemoration of the World Art Day at the International Institute for Creative Development, Abuja.
The female artists including Chinze Ojobo, Ella Onyebe, Lilain Pilaku, Anila Adnan, Hyeladzira Tami, Stella Cornel-Aghamba and Joy Iorvihi displayed works like ‘Women Affairs,’ ‘A private place,’ ‘ Desolate,’ ‘White men,’ ‘Family’ and ‘Generations Past.’ This is as their male counterparts also treated female themes like ‘Talking Eyes’ and ‘Dignity of Labour.’
The artists expressed themselves in various forms including mixed media, water colour, photography, oil on canvas and acrylic on canvas.
Mr. Abdullahi Muku, the Director General of the National Gallery of Art, organisers of the event, said April 15 has annually become a watershed to uphold art as an instrument of capturing the essence of humanity to do away with hate and conflicts especially in volatile or restive theatres of the world.
He said this year’s theme, ‘The Merge – fluidity of thoughts,’ is a directional post in which humanity attempts to aggregate all efforts into a synergy that can propel positive force in the realisation of goal that can make us all productive agents for sustaining peace for mutual benefit.
Sharing her thoughts on the exhibition, President of the Female Artists Association of Nigeria and one of the exhibiting artists, Mrs. Chinze Ojobo said, Nigeria’s art space and the world’s are growing more and more with the number of women artists who are beginning to saturate it and make their mark in the industry.
She said it was also commendable to see the male folk supporting women and bringing to the fore issues of concern.
