Last week, we were reminded about the age difference between the French president and his wife, when he got cozy with an older counterpart, the Croatian president. We got into an argument regarding woman marrying men who are younger than they are?

Abiola Hassan, 38- year-old nurse, says “I see nothing wrong in marrying someone older than I am. I don’t think it is something many should use as a criterion especially if the younger guy in question can carry out his responsibilities as a husband. You see, we have to be realistic sometimes, age is just a number and it is only here in Nigeria that it’s a big deal when it comes to marriage. In other climes, they don’t dwell on it too much.”

Fatima Abdulrasheed, 40-year-old doctor, says “Yes, age they say is just a number but while we are reflecting on that we should also consider the level of maturity of the younger guy we would like to take as a husband. Besides, the maturity of the woman also has to be considered as most women tend to want to control their men especially if they are older.”

Clara George, 40-year-old civil servant, says that “Happiness, contentment, tolerance, love and understanding are the ingredients of any healthy relationship. There are several of such marriages here in Nigeria where the wife is older and they are living very happily. Maturity and emotional balance of any individual is paramount in every sphere of life not age.”

Ezekiel Ogbonna 39-year-old engineer, says, “It’s only in a country like ours that age is considered a critical criteria for marriage. For me, as long as it’s not more than four years, then they are good to go because they are still within the same age group. Regarding the French president’s marriage, I think that is too extreme. They would be living in two different worlds.”

Folake Akintayo, 38-year-old beauty expert, says, “In Nigeria my dear, it is a taboo. Where I come from, I can’t even present such to my parents because they would first ask how old he is. It’s a no no for me. I can’t even marry someone of the same age with me, I prefer a man that is way older than me and one that will treat me like his child not someone I will be treating like a child and fighting young girls over him.”
