The Rector, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Dr. Kudirat Ladipo has disclosed plans by the institution to host its 70th anniversary programme and convocation ceremony for 9,021 graduating students.
At a pre-convocation briefing in Lagos, the rector said the graduating students comprises of 2,560 in different courses for Higher National Diploma (HND) and 6,461 for National Diploma (ND).
According to Dr Ladipo, Yabatech as a pioneer tertiary institution in Nigeria has come a long way and as such every effort will be put in place to make the 70th anniversary a success.
She said in line with the institution’s status as a foremost technological citadel of learning, the convocation guest lecturer, Prof. Emeka Eusebius Epuh would be speaking on the topic: "Repositioning Science and Technological Education in Nigeria for Global relevance".
"We firmly believe that the world has turned to a global village and technological changes are occurring at a rapid rate making it important for a developing country like Nigeria to re-position the state of technological power in the country in order to meet up with challenges.
"We understand science education is important to the development of any nation which makes it necessary for every nation to take it serious in all institution of learning and as we know it today, the developed countries were able to achieve so much in science and technology because of science education," Ladipo said.
The rector also call on all stakeholders in the education sector to put in place considerable emphasis on encouraging scientific temperament among Nigerian youth through sensitization programme in secondary schools and colleges.
